  • Level I Clinical: 6:45 am-2:45 pm
  • Level II/III daily: 6:45 am-2:45 pm

The curriculum, courses, and material within the courses are subject to change, elimination or reinforcement to ensure instruction remains current and in accordance with evidenced-based nursing practices.

ATTENTION: PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS — Starting with the Aug 2012-13 Class students with lower math scores on admissions test will be required to take a math review course one month prior to starting classes.

Level I – Theory and Clinical Learning -16 weeks

Clinical experience: Falling Spring Nursing and Rehab Center (FSNRC); Chambersburg Hospital

Nursing Fundamentals

Fundamentals is a beginning course in the application of principles of biological and social sciences to the administration of safe and effective nursing care. Nursing skills lab and clinical acute care and long term care experiences are correlated to help the student acquire knowledge and develop skill in delivery of basic nursing care.

Dosages and Solutions

This course reviews basic arithmetic and household measures. The metric system of measurement is reviewed. Practical application in solving dosage and solution problems concludes with an introduction to pharmacology.

Medical-Surgical Nursing I (Mental Health integrated)

This course emphasizes basic concepts in pathophysiology of common medical-surgical conditions and mental health concepts. The student is taught to use the nursing process to provide care to clients with these conditions.

Anatomy and Physiology

This course is designed to guide the student in developing an understanding of normal structure and function of the human body basic to nursing.

Community Based Nursing

Community Based Nursing introduces the student to community aspects of health care and community resources available to meet the needs of the individuals in the community.

Personal and Vocational Issues

This course is designed to help students make the necessary personal and professional adjustments in their development as practical nurses. Ethical, moral, legal and professional guidelines are emphasized. A brief history of nursing, nursing organizations, and career information is included.

Human Growth and Development

This course includes study of physical, social, emotional and intellectual development of the human from conception through senescence. Considers the influence of various theories on personality development. Common developmental problems are explored. Emphasis is on developmental tasks and basic needs of the individual.

Nutrition

This course is designed to provide a basic understanding in the study of Nutrition.

Level II – Theory and Clinical Learning -22 weeks

Clinical experience: Chambersburg Hospital, Keystone Health Center, Roxbury Treatment Center

Medical-Surgical Nursing II (Medication Experience and Pharmacology included)

This course provides further development in the study of medical-surgical nursing for the adult client with correlated clinical experience and integrated pharmacology. Clinical experiences are provided in Surgical Care, Radiology, Respiratory Therapy, Dialysis, Pulmonary Rehab, Cardiology, Behavioral Health, Rehab-Inpatient and Outpatient, the Pain Center, Lutheran Home Care Services and Hospice.

Maternal and Child Health Nursing

This course emphasizes the developmental tasks of the family and the changing roles and responsibilities of the parents and siblings due to pregnancy. Learning content includes the emotional and physiological changes of pregnancy, with a focus on the adaptations that are necessary to meet the needs of the child and the expanding family. The care of a child from infant to teen is explored, focusing on health promotion; common childhood illnesses and conditions are also discussed. Clinical nutrition and pharmacology are integral parts of the course.
Client needs are identified using the nursing process for the ill child and the expectant mother. Clinical experiences include the Maternity Unit, Keystone Health Center and Franklin County Pediatrics. Students will also participate in observation experiences at Day Care Centers, Franklin Learning Center, Head Start, and Keystone Women’s Health Center.

Level III – Theory and Clinical Learning -8 weeks

Clinical experience: Falling Spring Nursing and Rehab Center (FSNRC), Menno Haven Menno Village, Menno Haven Penn Hall, Manor Care

Geriatric Nursing (Rehabilitation integrated)

This course studies the aging process and how it relates to nursing care. Includes clinical learning on Alzheimer’s units, Elder Day, Senior Centers, and Assisted Living.

Leadership

The student is introduced to basic leadership skills. Included are clinical assignments providing charge nurse opportunities and an intensive medication administration experience. The professional, legal, and administrative responsibilities of the LPN are emphasized.
